What Are the Three Doshas? A Beginner's Guide to Vata, Pitta, and Kapha
All Things Veda | JUL 15
In Ayurveda, everything in nature — including the human body — is made of five elements: earth, water, fire, air, and space. These elements combine into three fundamental energies called doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Every person carries all three, but usually in a unique ratio that shapes their body type, temperament, and tendencies toward imbalance.
Vata (air and space) governs movement — breath, circulation, and the nervous system. When balanced, Vata brings creativity and flexibility; out of balance, it shows up as anxiety, dry skin, or irregular digestion.
Pitta (fire and water) governs transformation — digestion, metabolism, and intellect. Balanced Pitta brings focus and drive; excess Pitta shows up as irritability, inflammation, or acid reflux.
Kapha (earth and water) governs structure — the body's tissues, immunity, and stability. Balanced Kapha brings calm and endurance; excess Kapha shows up as sluggishness, weight gain, or congestion.
Ayurveda doesn't ask you to eliminate a dosha — it asks you to notice which one tends to run high for you, and to make small daily choices (in food, routine, and movement) that bring you back to your own natural balance.
Curious what your dosha is? Book an initial Ayurveda consultation and we'll map it out together — in Hamilton, Kitchener, or online.
